Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are currently managing a massive challenge. Much of the core highway and bridge network in developed nations like the USA was constructed 50 to 70 years ago, often exceeding its original design lifespan.
While the volume of traffic and the weight of commercial freight have increased exponentially, tax revenues and funding allocations have rarely kept pace. DOTs are often forced to do more with less, constantly pivoting between reactive repairs and long-term preventative maintenance.
For decades, the standard for structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation has been time consuming, limited in capacity and challenging to interpret. This traditional approach creates potential blind spots in asset management.
Thanks to advances in technology, this is no longer the case. Non-destructive evaluations (NDE) are now more accurate than ever with real-time data displayed on an iPad and detailed visualizations that are easier to interpret. For example, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) uses non-destructive testing equipment from Screening Eagle Proceq, including ground penetrating radars (GPR) and Ultrasonic Pulse Echo (UPE).

Here’s how the technologies have been helping the FDOT's work compared to the traditional methods.
“In my view, Screening Eagle equipment has revolutionized the way FDOT uses NDT and interprets field data. Before we began working with their team, NDE was typically used in a limited capacity, and older equipment often required hours of interpretation with a significant amount of uncertainty.
When I first saw the capabilities of the Screening Eagle GPR units, I immediately recognized the potential to transform our process. Since then, FDOT has embraced both the technology and the people behind it. The ability to collect and share data quickly, view results almost immediately with minimal post-processing, and trust the accuracy of the tools has significantly improved our evaluations.
Equally important has been the support from the Screening Eagle team—their willingness to answer questions, come on site, and provide hands-on training has been outstanding. That combination of innovation, usability, and service has set a new standard for NDE in my experience.”
